Mange is a skin problem in dogs that’s caused by tiny bugs called mites. These mites are so small you can’t see them without a microscope, but they can cause big problems like itching, redness, and hair loss. There are two main types of mange: sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange. Each one is caused by a different kind of mite and needs a different kind of treatment.
Sarcoptic Mange (Canine Scabies)
This type of mange is caused by a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. These mites dig into the dog’s skin to lay their eggs. Sarcoptic mange spreads really easily between dogs and even to people, where it can cause temporary itching.
Dogs with sarcoptic mange will scratch a lot. You might see red rashes, scabby skin, and bald spots, especially around the ears, belly, and elbows. In serious cases, the skin can become thick and crusty. Vets usually find this type of mange by scraping a bit of skin and checking it under a microscope, but sometimes it’s hard to spot the mites.
To treat sarcoptic mange, your vet may give your dog special creams, medicated baths, or pills to kill the mites. It’s important to treat every pet in the house and clean your home really well so the mites don’t come back.
Demodectic Mange (Demodex)
This kind of mange is caused by Demodex canis mites. These mites normally live in a dog’s hair follicles and don’t cause trouble unless the dog has a weak immune system. Puppies can get these mites from their mothers when they’re very young, but this kind of mange usually doesn’t spread to other animals or people.
There are two forms of demodectic mange. In the mild form, a dog might have a few small bald spots on the face or legs. The more serious form can cause a lot of hair loss, red skin, and even infections. Vets check for Demodex mites by doing a deeper skin scrape.
Mild cases can go away on their own, but more serious cases need medicine from the vet. Also, if the dog has another health problem, it’s important to treat that too so the immune system gets stronger.
What’s the Difference?
Sarcoptic mange spreads easily and causes lots of itching. Demodectic mange usually doesn’t spread and mostly shows up in dogs with weak immune systems. Sarcoptic mites dig into the skin, while Demodex mites live in the hair. Both types need vet care, but the treatments are a bit different.
