How to ensure adequate physical activity for your Pet

Keeping your dog active is just as important as feeding it well or taking it to the vet. Dogs need exercise to stay healthy and happy. Without enough movement, they can become overweight, get sick, or start behaving badly out of boredom. In Nigeria, it can be hard to give dogs enough exercise because many people have small spaces, busy lives, or safety concerns. But no matter where you live, there are ways to help your dog stay active. Exercise helps dogs keep a healthy weight, makes their muscles and joints strong, improves digestion, and even stops them from barking too much or chewing things they shouldn’t. It also keeps them mentally happy.

It is important to have it mind that different dogs need different amounts of activity. For example, small dogs like Chihuahuas need about 30 to 45 minutes of light play or short walks. Medium dogs like Beagles need about an hour, while big dogs like German Shepherds need 1 to 2 hours each day. Puppies need short play sessions throughout the day, and older dogs should do gentle activities like short walks or brain games. Even if you live in a small home or don’t have much time, there are fun things you can do. Outside, you can go for walks, play fetch, or let your dog run in a safe area. If it’s too hot, walk in the early morning or evening and always carry water.

Indoors, you can play tug-of-war, hide toys for your dog to find, or let them climb stairs if they’re able. Use toys that make them think too. Be careful in Nigeria’s hot weather—avoid hot pavement, give lots of water, and watch for signs that your dog is too tired or hot. For older or sick dogs, gentle walks, massages, and fun brain games are still helpful. If your schedule is tight or space is small, short indoor games work just fine. Dogs that are scared or not used to others should start in calm places. The important consideration is to make exercise part of your dog’s daily routine. Mix in some training, reward them with treats, and most of all—have fun with your dog!
