Description

Pigs are one of the most familiar animals in the world. They are smart, social, and useful to humans in many ways. Whether raised on farms or kept as pets, pigs deserve care and understanding.

 Geographic Distribution

Pigs are found all over the world. They are raised on farms in most countries for meat and other products. Wild pigs still live in forests and grasslands in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

 Physical Characteristics

Pigs have large round bodies, short legs, and strong snouts for digging. They can be black, white, pink, brown, or spotted. They use their snouts to find food in the ground.

1. Yorkshire (Large White)

A common farm pig known for fast growth and good meat.

Often kept as a pet. Small, smart, and friendly.

  • Size: Small to medium

  • Temperament: Friendly but stubborn

  • Health: Needs regular hoof trimming

3. Duroc

Red-colored pig known for muscle and tenderness.

Key Facts:

  • Color: Reddish-brown

  • Size: Large

  • Temperament: Docile

  • Health: Hardy, but needs clean shelter

  • Pigs are smarter than dogs!

  • They love to play and learn tricks.

  • Pigs do not sweat, they roll in mud to cool off.

  • A mother pig can have 10–12 piglets at once.

  • Some pigs can live over 15 years.

Pigs are very important to people:

  • Used in medical research and organ studies

  • Help control pests by eating waste and insects

Health & common issues

Pigs need clean shelter, good food, and medical care.
They can suffer from diseases like:

Regular vet visits, good hygiene, and vaccines help prevent sickness.

Conservation Status

Most domestic pigs are not endangered.
But wild pig species are threatened in some areas due to hunting and habitat loss.
